### Islam: Its Origin, Core Teachings, and the Five Pillars of Faith
@@@@@@@
#### Introduction
Islam is the second-largest religion in the world, with over 2 billion followers (Muslims) globally. The word “Islam” comes from Arabic and means **complete submission to the will of Allah** and attaining peace. It is not just a set of rituals but a comprehensive way of life that guides morality, justice, spirituality, and social conduct.
In this blog, we explore the historical establishment of Islam, the significance of the Quran, and the **Five Pillars of Islam** (Arkan-e-Islam).
#### Establishment of Islam: When and Under What Circumstances?
Islam was founded in the **7th century CE** in the Arabian Peninsula (present-day Saudi Arabia).
The journey began in **610 CE** when Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, at the age of 40, received the first divine revelation (Wahy) from Angel Jibril (Gabriel) while meditating in the **Cave of Hira** near Mecca. The first verse revealed was:
> “Iqra bismi rabbikallazi khalaq” — “Read in the name of your Lord who created...”
**Pre-Islamic Arabia (Age of Jahiliyyah)** was marked by:
- **Religious condition**: Polytheism was widespread. The Kaaba housed 360 idols.
- **Social condition**: Tribal warfare, female infanticide, oppression of women and slaves, alcohol, gambling, and exploitation of the weak were common.
- **Economic condition**: Wealth was concentrated among a few rich traders, while the poor, orphans, and widows suffered.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ preached **Tawhid** (the Oneness of God), social justice, mercy, honesty, and equality. He faced severe opposition in Mecca for 13 years. In **622 CE**, he migrated to Medina (known as **Hijrah**), which marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar (Hijri year). In Medina, the foundation of the first Islamic state was laid. By the time of the Prophet’s passing in 632 CE, most of Arabia had accepted Islam.
#### The Quran: The Most Important Book
The Quran is the final and complete word of Allah, revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ over 23 years. It contains 114 chapters (Surahs) and approximately 6,236 verses (Ayats).
The most important message in the Quran is **Tawhid** — the absolute oneness of Allah. **Surah Al-Ikhlas** (Chapter 112) is considered the essence of the Quran:
> “Say, He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent.”
Other key teachings include:
- Belief in the Hereafter (Akhirah)
- Justice, kindness, honesty, respect for parents, and care for neighbors
- Pursuit of knowledge and reflection
- Prohibition of exploitation, usury, and immorality
The Quran describes itself as a **“mercy to all mankind”** and serves as a complete guide for personal, social, and legal matters.
#### The Five Pillars of Islam (Arkan-e-Islam)
These five pillars form the practical foundation of a Muslim’s life:
1. **Shahada (Declaration of Faith)**
The first and most important pillar.
**“Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadar Rasulullah.”**
Meaning: “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad ﷺ is His messenger.”
This is the gateway to Islam.
2. **Salah (Prayer)**
Performing five daily prayers at prescribed times: Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha.
Prayer establishes direct connection with Allah, brings discipline, mental peace, and prevents wrongdoing. Friday (Jumu’ah) prayer is offered collectively.
3. **Zakat (Charity)**
Giving 2.5% of one’s savings (above a certain minimum) annually to the needy.
Zakat purifies wealth, reduces economic inequality, and promotes social welfare. It is obligatory, not optional.
4. **Sawm (Fasting in Ramadan)**
Fasting from dawn to sunset throughout the month of Ramadan.
Fasting develops self-control, empathy for the poor, patience, and closeness to Allah. It is not just abstaining from food and drink but also from bad habits and speech.
5. **Hajj (Pilgrimage)**
Every financially and physically capable Muslim must perform Hajj at least once in a lifetime.
Pilgrims wear simple white garments (Ihram), symbolizing equality. Hajj represents unity, sacrifice, and complete submission to Allah.
These Five Pillars transform faith into daily action and shape both individual character and society.
#### Conclusion
The core message of Islam is peace, justice, and submission to the Creator. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The best Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hands other Muslims are safe.”
In today’s divided world, the teachings of Islam — emphasizing equality, charity, discipline, and compassion — remain highly relevant. The Quran and the Five Pillars provide a complete framework for a balanced and meaningful life.
